Save our plant! Luton Vauxhall workers go into battle with Stellantis

Running time: 2 mins 16 secs

Car giant Stellantis are shutting the Vauxhall plant in Luton, their most profitable plant in the UK – despite the plant being on track to produce electric vans from January 2025, and the CEO Carlos Tavares being sacked for his poor performance in running the company.

But the 2,000 workers at the plant are determined to fight to save their jobs, as a fantastic community demonstration organised by UNITE the union showed.

Drivers of transport lorries – who would also lose their jobs if this closure goes ahead – showed their solidarity by refusing to cross the hundreds strong demonstration. This will be hurting Stellantis in the pocket already; they have £42 million worth of cars they need to shift out of the plant, each lorry costs them £600, and can transport 8 cars worth £35,000 each.

With at least a dozen lorries not going into the plant, that’s already around £3.5 million worth of cars that haven’t moved; and the demonstrations were planned to continue for the rest of the week, from 8am to 4pm.

Come and support the workers whenever you can; you’ll find the plant right opposite Luton Airport Parkway railway station.
