Skelton Grange,Leeds blockaded as workers demand HZI pay the rate

Running Time: 3mins 30secs

Yet another company trying to get away with not paying nationally agreed rates and importing their own poorly paid workforce – this time at Skelton Grange energy from waste project in Leeds.

But a huge turnout by UNITE and GMB construction workers signalled the start of a concerted campaign to make the contractors, HZI, see sense, as they blockaded the entrance and turned away deliveries.

This has been a problem on energy from waste projects for around 20 years now, with no attempt from the firms involved to upskill or provide apprenticeships to local people – at a time of a national skills shortage. But today was just a taster of what’s to come if HZI don’t pay the rate.
