Hackney Independent Socialist Councillors hold press conference as they leave the Labour Party

Running time: 4 mins 15 secs

In a press conference at the Hackney Divest Gaza Encampment outside Hackney Town Hall today, three councillors – Penny Wrout, Fliss Premru and Claudia Turbet Delof – announced their resignation from the Labour Party to become independent socialist councillors.

The three resigned in disgust at Labour Party’s appalling stance on Gaza, as they called for a permanent ceasefire and for Hackney Council to divest immediately from all arms firms complicit in the horrific ongoing genocide.

They also called for the reversal of all the anti-trade union laws and increased workers rights, proper funding for all councils to provide decent public services, and for an urgent plan for a green new deal to combat runaway climate change.

The three wil be working with local social movements to fight for all these thjngs – and hopefully more and more councillors both in Hackney and elsewhere will follow their example.
