Birmingham residents are fed up with the rubbish piling up in the city as a result of the binworkers strike – but are putting the blame firmly at the door of the council, and have every sympathy with workers who are being expected to accept an £8,000 a year paycut.
Furious at the council’s refusal to negotiate, a new community coalition called Clean Birmingham held a rally at the Town Hall to announce a council tax strike from April 1st until the dispute is sorted out.
They will support everyone taking part, including if the council try to take people to court. Their advice is in the video; put the money in a savings account, showing that it is being withheld rather than not being paid – because the council is not fulfilling their statutory obligation to provide a functioning refuse service.
This is yet another setback for the beleaguered and increasingly isolated council, who now look set to face disaster in the council elections in May if they don’t come back to the table very soon.
