Members of UNITE the Union take to the streets to demand an end to the scandal of bogus self-employment in the construction industry. It is becoming virtually impossible to be directly employed by companies, with most workers being recruited by agencies who demand that you register as self-employed or work via an umbrella company – which means that neither the agency nor the company have to pay tax and benefits. Workers are being deprived of their rights, the workforce is being deskilled and the country is being deprived of millions of pounds in tax. In 2014, electricians walked off a job at Three Bridges when the bosses attempted to impose the umbrella scam – three hours later all of them had won direct employment contracts on national agreement terms and conditions. That’s the sort of action that can beat this corrupt scheme.
